PREFACE.
Some explanation is due why a description of "Waikato Forty Years Ago" appears in a book professedly written by a colonist of only ten years standing. The facts are these: a valued friend kindly gave me a MSS. containing his early experiences in New Zealand, with the proviso that, in case of publication, his name should not appear; I had to respect his wishes, and I have consequently assumed a degree of authorship to which I am not entitled, reserving to myself the right of confession.
For the more modern portion I am solely responsible.
I have only to add that my "Rambles" were not always as consecutive as I have described them; for the sake of convenience I have connected together numerous journeys made at various intervals.
