[PREFACE]

PREFACE.

IN presenting to the public the present volume--the first Almanac in a book form ever published in Taranaki--the compiler is sensible of many errors and omissions, which he hopes on another occasion to be able to rectify. The work has been produced at a time when the Province was undergoing a season of great depression, and although it is not probable that it will prove a successful mercantile speculation, still the proprietor of the establishment from which this volume is issued has other motives for its production, and it would be a regret if any want of enterprise on his part should leave this Province any longer unrepresented by a publication of the character of this handy book of reference,--useful alike to the resident as to the stranger--containing as it does much information regarding the Province of Taranaki.

The compiler takes the present opportunity of thanking those gentlemen who have supplied him with information; and his special thanks are due to Captain Holford, Harbour master, for kindly calculating the tables of the tides, and the rising and setting of the sun in the calender; therefore that part may be depended upon for accuracy; also to Mr. Thomas Kelly for permission to reprint his paper on the "Soils, Climate, and Capabilities of Taranaki," written for the "International Exhibition of 1866."

The directory was the most difficult part the compiler had to encounter; but, thanks to the assistance of a friend, he is enabled to present the public with an alphabetical list of nearly all the residents in the Province. Of course he is conscious that when the volume is issued many names will be discovered as being omitted; but these errors he hopes to be able to rectify on another occasion.

In conclusion it may be stated that the Almanac will be issued annually, and future publications the compiler will endeavour to make more perfect and useful.

THE EQUATION OF TIME.

The column in the Calendar headed "Equation of Time," will be useful for setting watches. The rising and setting of the sun is calculated for apparent time; therefore by adding or subtracting the equation of time as directed at the head of the column, the mean time is obtained.

ECLIPSES.

In the year 1869 there will be two eclipses of the sun, and two of the moon, none of which will be visible in New Zealand.
