THE following Report on the COAL DEPOSITS OF NEW ZEALAND has been prepared at the desire of the Colonial Office in a manner uniform with reports of a similar nature which have already been laid before the British Parliament.
A great deal of information which would have local interest has therefore been omitted, especially such details as relate to the history of the discovery of the various coal mines and to minute descriptions of local features which could only have been given by quotations from reports already published.
As, however, it has been considered desirable to publish this report in the Colony, it is necessary in doing so to indicate for the New Zealand reader, the principal special reports in which fuller information respecting the coal deposits will be found. It may be mentioned that as they are scattered throughout a variety of Gazettes and other official publications which are difficult to obtain, it is intended to reprint extracts from these reports in a better form for preservation, and uniform with other publications of the Geological Department.
Wellington, N.Z., October, 1866.
