TWENTY-FIVE YEARS' EXPERIENCE
IN
NEW ZEALAND
AND
THE CHATHAM ISLANDS.

An Autobiography.

SECOND EDITION.

Go forth! young pioneers, go forth!
As men prepared for strife!
Let truth and honour be your shield,
And battle well with life.
Aye! let your martial sounds be heard
Through distant forest glades;
The axe and mattock ringing out
To the music of your spades.

[PREFACE]

PREFACE.

THE Autobiography here presented to the Public is the narrative of a working man who has risen to a superior position by no lucky move on the great chess-board of life, nor by successful and daring speculation, but simply by force of character, energy, integrity, and industry; often depressed by cruel circumstances: cast down, but never destroyed, he fought the battle of life manfully; and presented so true a type of the old Anglo-Saxon race, that the writer urged him to unfold his experience to the world. To this he kindly, but somewhat reluctantly, consented, and produced the present narrative. The words, with some few exceptions, are his own; and events are related as they actually occurred. The writer therefore submits this to the Public in the humble hope that the tale will not be without its moral,

J. A.
