PREFACE.

IN presenting to the public of Auckland the first Directory ever published of the City and its Suburbs, the Compilers are sensible that there must be many errors that will be visible at a glance, now that the work is printed. It is, however, the nature of such an undertaking that it should always remain incomplete. But we beg to assure those who may support us on this occasion, that no effort has been spared to render this volume as perfect as was possible in the nature of the work itself; and that no effort will be spared to render future publications equal to the requirements of the commercial public.

In compiling the Streets Directory, our Collectors have had more than the usual difficulties to contend with, as nothing would disabuse the minds of many fair dames of the impression that the information being sought was not for the purpose of another Militia levy, or for purposes of taxation by the General Government; and they, on that account, point blank refused to give any particulars. Still there is no house embraced in the area of collection, namely, Auckland (City), Dedwood, Newton, Parnell, Remuera (part), Otahuhu, and Onehunga, occupied at the time of collection, which is left unaccounted for; nor is there any name knowingly omitted from the Alphabetical or other Lists.

We beg to call the attention of our Subscribers to the Map accompanying the Directory. It is the first attempt which has yet been made to give the City and Suburbs at one view, and will, we doubt not, prove of great advantage for com- mercial and general reference.

All the information at first intended to be included in the Directory is not included in this issue; but, even as it is, there is much more than was promised. We may say, also, that the cost of this first issue is so great that the apparently high price of the work will not more than repay "costs out of pocket."

To those gentlemen who have kindly corrected some of the information contained in the Directory, we beg to return our best thanks.

In conclusion, we have only to say that it is our intention to issue the Directory annually, and that a future publication will embrace the entire Province of Auckland.

MITCHELL & SEFFERN,

Compilers and Printers.

Auckland, November, 1866.
