TO THE READER.
A LARGE portion of this sketch was originally written for the Official Handbook of New Zealand. In the preparation of the part referring to Otago, material was collected not adapted for that publication, and its possession suggested to me the idea of combining the whole, and issuing the sketch in its present form.
Considerable difficulty has been experienced in obtaining particulars of the earliest years, and many incidents which would be interesting will undoubtedly be found wanting, but as the first effort of the kind--which may hereafter be supplemented--I trust this small volume will be found acceptable and amusing to the colonists, as well as valuable for reference to those who desire to con the history of the past.
