PREFACE.
SINCE his arrival in England, the Writer of the following papers has been repeatedly urged, by persons who conceived that the experience he had acquired in his official capacity, as well as in that of a Proprietor of Land and Live Stock in New South Wales, qualified him for the undertaking, to publish such information respecting that Colony, as would tend to place upon their real footing, the inducements it holds out to Emigration from this country.
He has not, however, been able to command sufficient leisure to compile a Work which he could offer to the public, as a complete view of the whole question, so far as his abilities permitted, and he has not therefore attempted the task; but, he has thought that it would not be without its use to lay before the public, a selection from his papers, which seemed calculated, in some degree, to attain the object in view. These papers, with the exception of the one intituled "Advice to Emigrants newly arrived in New South Wales," which is reprinted from the Appendix to the Sydney Almanack for 1831, were not originally intended for publication; but having made known his object to the Right Hon. Viscount Goderich, his Majesty's

Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies, the Writer has received his Lordship's permission to offer them to the public. Some of the observations they contain are not applicable, under the present regulations; but having been unable to re-cast the whole, he has thought it best to publish them in their original form, and to give in an Appendix such explanations as appeared necessary, as well as such additional information as he was able, in the hurry of other avocations, to throw together.
The present state of New Zealand cannot be without interest to those who are contemplating a residence in New South Wales, and he has therefore included a paper relative to those interesting Islands.
