PREFACE.
IN introducing to public notice the proposal of establishing a Scotch Colony at Otago, in New Zealand, the Lay Association of the Free Church of Scotland would refer to the several documents contained in this pamphlet, as setting forth the grounds on which they conceive such a proposal to be deserving of the confidence and favourable consideration of the people of Scotland.
I. The extract from the records of the General Assembly of the Free Church is a sufficient testimony of their approbation of the general principles on which this Colony is founded: of the value of this testimony there is no need to speak, for all must be aware of it.
II. General observations explanatory of the Scheme.
III. Remarks on New Zealand as a field for British Colonisation; and (as the authorities for these remarks), extracts from Parliamentary documents, and other publications; showing the great advantages of this Colony.
IV. Description of the district of Otago, the site of the Colony.
V. Extracts from official documents relative to the Purchase and Land Title to Otago District.
VI. Arrangements for the establishment of a Settlement, and for the disposal of the Lands of the New Zealand Company, at Otago.
From these several documents, then, it will appear, that it is proposed to select, with the utmost care, an entire section of the Free Church, with its due proportion of labour and capital, and provided with its own minister and schoolmaster; and to transplant this section, so organised, to a locality, most carefully selected, i.e. New Zealand -- a country equal in extent to the [corner of page missing] Britain and Ireland, with all the smaller Islands. [corner of page missing] unrivalled in climate of extraordinary [corner of page missing] mineral treasures -- indented throughout [corner of page missing] coast with numerous harbours--ad [corner of page missing] both to the feeding of sheep, and [corner of page missing]

of grain--and destined, in all probability, from its commanding position in reference to the great Asiatic and South American Continents, to become at some future period the great commercial emporium of the South Pacific. Whilst such an enterprise, therefore, presents no ordinary claims as a safe and good money investment, it in reality assumes a character far loftier and more important than any mere pecuniary speculation, however extensive; for, the success of such an undertaking cannot fail, under God, to exert an influence of the most valuable and enduring description upon the great cause of Christian Missions on the one hand, whilst on the other it would set a most salutary example--long and urgently wanted -- of a sound and satisfactory system of British colonisation.
