PREFACE.

IN one of the first issues of the Emigration Guide a promise was given that the work should grow with the growth of the Colonies, and expand with their expansion. That promise has been faithfully kept in view, and the division of the Emigration Guide into three separate and independent parts is one of its results. So rapid has been the rate of Colonial progress, even within the last few years, that a single volume devoted to all the Emigration Colonies would exceed in cost the moderate charge by which it was intended to make the work unique for cheapness as well as for real usefulness. Hence the division of the Emigration Guide into issues, devoted to Australasia, South Africa, and British North America, will, it is hoped, be considered a timely improvement.

Those who have followed the undertaking cannot but be aware of the object the Editors had in view. To direct the stream of Emigration to British Colonies; to aid--no matter in how humble a manner--in preserving the thousands who annually leave our shores, to the political power, the moral influence, and the commercial greatness of our country--these have been some of the aims of the Editors. Another object has been the opening up of the various

Colonies, and the wrestling, by practical demonstration, with the vulgar prejudice that Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, and other great countries, are limited to two or three port-towns, and that beyond Melbourne, Sydney, or Adelaide, the country is either a blank or a howling wilderness. Not by assertion and declamation, but by the enumeration of routes, railways, steam-boat lines, by the description of large and thriving inland towns, have the Editors sought to combat an opinion, which, founded on but too common an ignorance, has in many instances either prevented Emigration, or caused the Emigrants to waste their time, money, and opportunity in the over-crowded port-towns.

With respect to the information contained in this work, what the Editors give, that they have received. Whenever that information has been taken from published books, the extracts thus made have been duly acknowledged. But much has been taken from unpublished sources, and the Editors have to thank Messrs. Frederick Sinnett of Adelaide, J. C. Tyler and J. L. Evans of Melbourne, G. F. Wise of Sydney, E. Gregory of Brisbane, T. D. Chapman of Hobart Town, J. Gilfillan and R. B. Lusk of Auckland, J. Woodward of Wellington, J. L. Bailey of Nelson, G. Gould of Christchurch, T. S. Forsaith of Dunedin, and J. Smallfield of Invercargill, for the lively interest they have shown in the work, and the active assistance they have given to its completion.
