TO THE PUBLIC.
As I have been deaf for many years, consequently I cannot speak properly; I have deemed it necessary to write this small introduction, to say, that I have written a true and faithful account of the principal events which have befallen me during my thirty years labor in New Zealand. But now at the age of Seventy-five years I am past labor; and as our country cannot boast of a retreat for the aged I am compelled, as these pages will shew, to persue the present most humiliating course. It will be seen that for sixteen years I have had nothing but reverses, and now the crisis has come. Therefore I go forth trusting to a generous public to buy what I have got to sell. My aim is to sell at least ten thousand copies if even I shall have to travel from the North Cape to the Bluff; and willing to perish in the way.
JOHN HALL.
