WELLINGTON PROVINCE
PASTORAL INFORMATION.
The progress of the province in its pastoral wealth has of late years been most satisfactory. As an indication of the huge advance in this direction, we subjoin the following figures, which will enable a comparison to be made between the past and the present. In 1845, the total number of sheep in the Province of Wellington was 12,002; in 1850 this number had increased to 42,642; and in 1855, to 193,701. In 1845, the number of horned cattle in the province was 2298; in 1850 they had increased to 8068; and in 1855, to 18,400. In 1845, Wellington possessed 260 horses; in 1850 they had increased to 909; and in 1855 the settlers owned 1068; exclusive of a large number belonging to the Maories. In 1845 the total live stock in the Province of Wellington amounted to 15,125; in 1850, to 52,828; and in 1855 the total live stock belonging to Europeans alone amounted to 226,934.
The following figures, compiled from the census returns published May, 1865, show the numbers of live stock in the possession of Europeans in the Province of Wellington in the years 1858, 1861, and 1864 respectively.

The slight decrease in the number of cattle in 1864, as compared with 1861, is due to the immense exportation to the south, as well as to the fact that the breeding of sheep has been more extensively engaged in, as affording better returns.
