WELLINGTON PROVINCE.

WELLINGTON PROVINCE.

Wellington, founded in 1839, was the first regular settlement established in New Zealand, and is now the capital and seat of Government.

Its most important feature is its fine harbour, which consists of an inlet of the sea, about six miles in diameter, and nearly landlocked on every side. On one side of this is the Valley of the Hutt, consisting of about 15,000 acres of land of first-rate fertility, part of which is heavily timbered.

The rest of the country for twenty or thirty miles consists of hills varying in height from 500 to 1500 feet, interspersed with narrow valleys or portions of table land of considerable fertility, but partly covered with timber.

At a distance of thirty or forty miles fine districts equally fitted for pasture and agriculture (for which Wellington is the port of deposit) commence.

On the north-west the mountains begin to recede from the coast at a distance of about thirty miles from Wellington, gradually leaving a splendid tract which extends, with few breaks, all the way to New Plymouth. On the east side, at the head of Palliser Bay, is the fine valley of the Wairarapa, containing above 350,000 acres of level land, connected with large level grassy plains, divided from each other by low hills, which extend up to Hawkes Bay on the one hand, and the head of the Manawatu River on the other. This block is admirably adapted both for agricultural and grazing purposes.

We must also notice the purchase of a large block of fertile land by Dr. Featherston from the natives at the Manawatu Valley, than which no part of the province possesses greater advantages, with its magnificent river, fertile plains, and unlimited supply of the most valuable timber. This has been thrown open for sale for some time now, and has peculiar attraction for settlers of moderate capital. The total of acres under crop in this province in 1864 was 95,415, made up as follows:--Wheat, 764 acres; oats, 1720; barley, 116; maize, 14 acres; potatoes, 644; in garden and orchard, 1023 acres; in sown grasses, 90,286 acres; in other crops, 825 acres. The total European population possessing these amounted to 14,987 persons.

During the past twelve months, through the removal of the seat of Government, a large number of persons (besides officials) have come from the other provinces and the adjacent colonies to settle in Wellington, where warehouses, shops and dwelling-houses have been erected in every quarter. There is little doubt, with the prospects now opening up, and its having become the terminus of the Panama line (which will no doubt cause intimate and profitable relationship between the American continent and New Zealand generally,) that it will become one of the most important places in the southern hemisphere. We would also notice the erection of the new building, which is to serve as the Cathedral of the diocese, is now nearly completed. St. Peter's has also been considerably improved by additions to each of the wings.

It is also anticipated that a new "Church of Scotland" will be erected in place of the present ancient and decaying structure. There is also a new Congregational chapel.

Cobb and Co.'s coaches run from Welling along the West Coast to Wanganui (a distance of 134 miles,) twice a-week--fare, £3. Also, on the East Coast to Masterton and Wairarapa (a distance of seventy miles)--fare, 25s.

The submarine cable (for the junction of the telegraphic communication of the North and Middle Islands) has arrived. We trust it will be successfully laid, and in active operation shortly, as the benefits accruing from such will undoubtedly be very great.

Before concluding our remarks, we have great pleasure in noticing an extensive local industry, viz., the steam cabinet factory of Mr. James, at Lambton-quay, which we hope may meet with liberal encouragement.

The newspapers, also (particularly the old-established daily Independent, and tri-weekly Advertiser) are deserving of very flattering notice, for the ability and urbanity of their various staff; and many articles on necessary reforms, &c. &c., emanate from them. As a cheering indication of the increase of trade, we quote the Customs Returns (duties paid on imports) for the first three months of 1866, as against those of a similar period in 1865. They are as follows:--1st January, 1866, to 31st March, £16,432; 1st January, 1865, to 30th March, £12,898 -- increase on quarter, £3534.

WANGANUI, TURAKINA, AND RANGITIKEI.--DESCRIPTIVE, &c.

(From the Wellington Almanack.)

THESE districts comprehend a very extensive tract of valuable agricultural and pastoral country, stretching along the coast for about fifty miles in length, and from twelve to eighteen miles inland. The first in importance is Wanganui, situated on both banks of the Wanganui river, and extending twenty miles to the Waitotara river on the north side, and nine miles to the Wangahue river on the south side; between this and the Turakina river is a native reserve, four miles in width. This latter river forms the northern boundary of the Turakina and Rangitikei districts, the southern boundary of which is the Rangitikei river. The population of these districts and Wanganui, according to the census of 1864, consisted of 2170 males, 1521 females, and is increasing more than any other part of the Province of Wellington. South of these on the road to Wellington, lies the Manawatu-Rangitikei block, for the purchase of which the Government is now negotiating, and which will afford as fine a locality for a settlement, as any in New Zealand.

The thriving town of Wanganui lies pleasantly situated on the north bank of the river of the same name, about four miles from the Heads, and consists of about 300 houses, mostly all built of wood. Within the last few years a great many large, handsome, and substantial buildings have been erected, some of them which can vie with any in the Province for size and appearance; viz.: Messrs. Taylor and Watt's store, Taupo-quay; Howe's Rutland Hotel and Assembly Rooms, (Royal Princess Theatre,) Victoria Avenue; Mr. Burnett's, Victoria Avenue; Davidson's Steam Packet Hotel, Taupo quay, &c. There are four churches, viz., Church of England, Presbyterian, Wesleyan, and Roman Catholic, which last is a magnificently finished erection. The Wesleyan Chapel has been greatly enlarged during the past year, and the foundation stone of a new Episcopalian Church was laid by the Lord Bishop of Wellington in the month of October last. The present building was one of the earliest erected in the colony, and is in a state of decay. The Custom-house and Post-office are situated on the quay, and the Police, Resident Magistrate's Court, Gaol, Provincial Sub-Treasurer's, and Provincial Engineer's Offices are under one building, at the corner of the public market square. Communication between the north and south side of the river is at present carried on by means of punts and ferry boats; but a handsome substantial iron bridge was ordered from England in March last, and may therefore be expected to arrive during the current year. The river opposite the town is about two hundred yards wide, with a good depth of water. The steamer Moutoa, built at Waikato heads, especially for the navigation of this river, runs continually up and down to supply the various military posts that have been established beyond the limits of the settlement.

The township of Turakina is thirteen miles from Wanganui, and although till October last contented with being called by the modest name of "the village," contains about fifty houses, two hotels, three general stores, a bakery, &c., and a very pretty, neat Presbyterian church and manse.

The township or Rangitikei, eighteen miles from Turakina, has only lately been laid off on Capt. Daniell's estate of Killeymoon, and at the auction sale in October realised fabulous prices per section. There is a good metalled road from Rangitikei through Turakina to the town of Wanganui; and besides two well established local carrying firms, Messrs. Cobb and Co.'s coaches will pass through on their journey from Wellington to Wanganui, three times a week.

There is a very large export of cattle, sheep and butter from these districts, and a steadily increasing production of wool. Vessels of 150 or 200 tons can enter the river, and the N. Z. S. N. Co.'s steamers, and the Wanganui Steam Company's screw steamer are continually running between the settlement and the capital of the Province.

Wanganui, from its position, must become the prosperous centre of a fertile and thickly-populated country, from which it is the only port.
