OTAGO PROVINCE

OTAGO PROVINCE

THIS Province was colonised in 1848, under the auspices of the New Zealand Company, by an association of the lay members of the Free Church of Scotland. Dunedin, the capital of the province is situated at the south western side of the harbour, now so well known as Port Chalmers, the finely wooded scenery of which draws forth the admiration of most beholders. The Matura River forms the southern, and the Waitaiki the northern boundary; between these, and extending to the west coast, is a tract of nearly two hundred miles. Otago throughout is admirably adapted for the rearing of stock, the country generally being well-grassed though hilly and undulating; it, however, boasts of numerous plains, which are very fertile and well adapted for agriculture; the most prominent of these are the Taieri, Tokomairiro, and Molyneaux, the latter of which is the most extensive. The climate is very healthy, and it is amply blessed with a plentiful water supply. In 1861 very rich and easily worked gold-fields were discovered, and for three years the province continued to advance very materially in wealth and prosperity; after which period owing to the richest of the deposits seemingly having been found, and the reports of the numerous individual heavy finds on the neighbouring west coast diggings, a great exodus of the mining population took place from the province; however, the Government proved equal to the emergency, and granted extended claims, thus encouraging the more systematic and extensive working of the ground on the latest and most approved principles of mining economy--the plentiful water supply forming a valuable medium for this purpose, the application of which generally was comparatively inexpensive. Miners average very good wages here, considerably over £3 per week each, and there is ample scope and a large area of equally rich ground open for several thousand more gold diggers of the genuine stamp. The duration of these gold fields is unquestionable. Numerous quartz reefs have lately been discovered; some being very rich; and generally they are easily worked, and are attracting considerable attention now, as they promise well.

Dunedin is one of the most beautiful cities in the southern hemisphere, and can boast of some most elaborate and tasteful stone erections--(vide Banks of New Zealand, New South Wales, Australasia, Otago, Commercial, &c. &c.) The streets are well paved, and the town brilliantly illuminated with gas. It is the principal market for the Middle Island, and is in telegraphic communication with Christchurch, Picton, Blenheim, Nelson, Greymouth , Hokitika and Invercargill.

Cobb and Co.'s Telegraph Line of Royal Mail Coaches, Henry Hoyt and Co. proprietors; office, corner of Stafford and Princes streets, Dunedin -- Northern Branch: Coaches of this line leave regularly three times a-week for Christchurch, via Waikouaiti, Omaru, Waitaki, Timaru, &c. &c.

North-western Branch -- To Queenstown, via Kyeburn, Hogburn, Blacks, Alexandra and Arrow, &c.

Southern Branch--To Invercargill, via Waihola, Tokomairiro, Popotunoa, &c.

Present produce of agricultural land in province under crop, about £200,000 per annum.

OAMARU.

Oamaru is the most northern township of Otago, and forms the centre of the largest pastoral and wool-producing district of the province; it also bids fair to become an extensive agricultural district, the soil and climate being specially favourable for the production of wheat. The breadth of land under crop this year is much greater than last, and is likely to increase steadily for many years to come.

Oamaru is pleasantly situated on a gently rising slope on the sea coast, forming the southern corner of an extensive ocean beach, and is distant about eighty miles from Dunedin. It is the only port for the shipment of wool and receipt of supplies for the extensive inland tract of country from Moeraki to the Waitaki river, a distance of above forty miles. The following statistics, compiled from the Customs Returns, will give an approximate idea of the present trade of this port:-.

The present population of this town is about 900, and it is steadily and satisfactorily advancing. Its greatest drawback has been the want of proper facilities for landing goods, but fortunately this serious obstacle is in process of removal, by the erection of a jetty by the Provincial Government at a cost of £7000. To show the necessity for this public work, we need only mention that although the sandstone quarries are situated within two or three miles of Oamaru, constant shipments have been made during the past year from the port of Moeraki, involving a land carriage of above twenty miles, thus adding very considerably to its expense and more general introduction in Dunedin and elsewhere. Its products consist of sandstone (a beautiful white specimen, soft to work, yet becoming very hard by exposure, in fact, by far the best sample yet found on the east coast of New Zealand, and very valuable;) limestone, the matrix of Portland cement; also a fine stone (interspersed with fossil remains,) suitable for lithographic purposes; and wool and grain.

The Bank of New Zealand have erected a very handsome branch here. It also boasts of a brewery, carriage manufactory, a Presbyterian and Episcopalian Church.

PALMERSTON.

This township is situated in the Shag Valley district, and is the location of numerous small farmers, who have purchased all the available agricultural land in the district. It is the scene of a busy and thriving agricultural population. Coal, limestone and marble are also found in its immediate vicinity. Population, about 150.

WAIKOUAITI.

The private township of West Hawkesbury is beautifully situated upon the northern shore of Waikouaiti, distant about half-a-mile from the sea, and twenty-eight miles N. E. of Dunedin. It is progressing rapidly and steadily. Population, about 600.

TOKOMAIRIRO.

The Tokamariro plain, distant about thirty-five miles from Dunedin, S. W., is in shape nearly a perfect oval. Its length is about seven miles, and average breadth about three. Being almost level, although somewhat exposed, it is admirably adapted for agricultural purposes, especially for the growth of oats and barley, of the former of which a large quantity is grown.

CLUTHA.

The extensive agricultural lands on the banks of the Clutha or Molyneux River, more especially for the first twenty miles from its mouth, and the surrounding districts of Kaitangata, Warepa, &c., have brought together a large rural population, mainly employed in the cultivation of the soil, which for richness is not surpassed, if equalled, by any other district in the province; Inch Clutha, from its very excellent soil, having earned the well-known epithet of "The Garden of Otago."

The s. s. Tuapeka is engaged plying between Dunedin and the Molyneux River.

There is a Presbyterian church and Government school; also new premises for the Bank of Otago; while the Newmarket

Hotel, and several other business premises have been erected during the past year. Altogether, the Clutha District may be considered one of the steadiest and most substantial in its growth of all the settlements in the province.
