[PREFACE]

PREFACE.

THE Author feels he has no occasion to state that the greater part of the following work has appeared in print before;----such a production must necessarily be little more than a compilation;----but he considers it due to those authors from whose works extracts have been made, to state that the possibility of creating confusion among the already numerous notes alone prevented him from acknowledging them in the proper places.

Though portions of 130 works, newspapers, &c., appear in the work, the authors to whom especial acknowledgment is due are the Rev. G. E. Gleig, whose numerous military works are well known, Mr. Conolly ("History of the Royal Sappers and Miners"), and the numerous writers whose articles have appeared in the "United Service Magazine."
