THIS DIARY of family life and station work and hospitality in the 1860s is one of many kept by Mrs Caverhill and not previously published as a complete text. It is centred on Hawkswood, North Canterbury, a coastal run near Kaikoura, but in its homestead emphasis has much general interest relating to the domestic scene in those times.
For this limited edition printing the diary for the full year has been divided to make two matching volumes, each of six months' duration, annotated separately and published at an interval.
Highlights of this first volume, January-June, include an Easter coach trip to town by husband and wife, with a fortnight's social round in early Christchurch and Rangiora, and the station crisis of an accident to the head shepherd, who falls down a precipice while out pig-shooting.
