THIS DIARY of family life and station work and hospitality in the 1860s is one of many kept by Mrs Caverhill and not previously published as a complete text. It is centred on Hawkswood, North Canterbury, a coastal run near Kaikoura, but in its homestead emphasis has much general interest relating to the domestic scene in those times.
For this limited edition printing the diary for the full year has been divided to make two matching volumes, each of six months' duration, annotated and published separately.
The follow-on diary entry for New Year's Day 1866 is included as an appendix to this second volume. Along with its added interest as a record of a typical holiday outing of the period, it seems to bring our chosen Hawkswood year to a happier ending.
