PREFACE.
After ten years service in the Navy, Mr. J. A. Wilson (the of the following journal) took employ under the Church Mission, and was at once posted to their Maori mission in New Zeal x catechist. 1 He sailed from England on the 21st September with his wife and family, on board the convict transport "Camden," bound for Sydney.
With England's outcasts on board the "Camden" Mr. Wilson soon interested himself, attending to their spiritual wants. Though here for a while he was looked upon with suspicion by the officers in charge.
Leaving the "Camden" in Sydney harbour, he proceeded voyage to New Zealand in the "Byron," where he arrived on the 12th April, 1833.
We may smile at such a tedious voyage now, but such then was travelling. What follows is from Mr. Wilson's journal.
