THE ART OF ETCHING.

By ALFRED ASHLEY. Illustrated with Fourteen Etchings, by the Author. Elegantly hound in a cover, printed in gold and colours, designed by Owen Jones, price 10s 6d.

The work of Mr. Ashley is chiefly addressed to the amateur. The text is accompanied by some beautiful examples, etched with great delicacy, but very effective.--Art Journal.

This is a very interesting little publication, containing instructions on the use of the etching needle, grounds, biting liquids. &c. It takes its origin, the preface informs us, in the prevailing fashion for ladies, from the Sovereign downwards, to amuse themselves in the occupation of etching. The author has defined the processes with much clearness. The etchings which accompany his observations possess great merit. They are in a variety of styles, and comprehend landscape, marine subjects, and figures, many executed with much beauty. The trees in the Frontispiece are touched with great spirit; so are the pollard willows in Plato III. The ruins in Plate V, are effective. The second subject in Plate VII. is very elegant--the distance in Plate IX. excellent. The anatomy of the trees in Plate X. is given with great feeling and care, and a very effective subject of landscape and animals is Plate XII.--Athenaeum.

This series unmistakeably comprises some of the most brilliant, the most exquisitely rendered, and, by far, the most effective modern production of this interesting branch of art we have ever had an opportunity of examining. The letter-press instruction is conveyed clearly and agreeably, and the getting up of the volume is perfection itself, whilst its binding is at once rich and daintily elegant.--Magazine of Science.

DEDICATED BY PERMISSION TO THE PRINCE OF WALES.

THE LIFE OF A FAIRY.

NAVAL AND MILITARY PUBLICATIONS.

A CLARET-CUP,

for Naval Messes, and the Public generally: being Reminiscences and Sketches of Percival Plug, R.N. By JAMES HANNAY, author of "Biscuits and Grog," &c. Third Edition, price 1s.

KING DOBBS:

Sketches in Ultramarine. By JAMES HANNAY, author of "Biscuits and Grog," &c. With Twelve Illustrations on Steel, by Ashley, and numerous Wood Engravings. Post 8vo., price 7s, cloth.

As a delineator of incidents and life at sea, Mr. Hannay seems to us to be advancing rapidly to the place occupied by "the Old Sailor," in his happier days. A full share of praise is due to Mr. Ashley, the artist: his illustrations are excellent.--Eastern Counties Herald.

This is a capital sea story, and we think our predictions as to its success will be completely verified. It is written in a pleasant and lively style, and comprises an abundant flow of humour, and interesting incidents.--Plymouth and Devonport Weekly Journal.

These sketches in ultra-marine prove vastly interesting--the more they advance the more we like them. The pic-nic on board the Baboon is very cleverly written, and the illustrations by A. Ashley are very creditably executed.--Liverpool Chronicle.

A continuation of interesting adventures by land and sea, by the author of those amusing and satirical publications, "Biscuits and Grog," "A Claret-Cup," &c, in which many strange scenes are depicted. The writer maintains his satirical vein, and his little work, with its embellishments, will well repay a perusal. The dialogues are full of spirit and anecdote.--Plymouth Herald.

This little serial maintains the interest which the first number called forth. The character of old Toe Chilton is well developed; and his singular manner of forming friendships by treading on the toes of his victims is original, and stamps the author a man of humour.--Doncaster Gazette.

King Dobbs excels in breadth of fun and humour.--Morning Chronicle.

These Sketches in ultramarine will amuse those who used to delight in Captain Marryatt, Basil Hall, and Glasscock. Though the whole of the boat-cloak of either of those sea writers has not fallen upon Mr. Hannay, he inherits a fair portion of it, and under its covering will, we think, perform a prosperous voyage.--Bell's Life.

These sketches in ultramarine are of an exceedingly amusing character. The reader is treated with a cruise in the Mediterranean, and the result of a trip on shore at Naples.--Plymouth, Devonport, and Stonehouse Herald.

NAVAL AND MILITARY PUBLICATIONS.

THE HORSEGUARDS.

By THE TWO MOUNTED SENTRIES. With Twelve coloured Illustrations. Handsomely bound, price 10s 6d. "Thus saith the duke--thus hath the duke inferred."--Shakspeare.

The Horse Guards proves to be a work written by an officer, and which contains a vast amount of practical knowledge, sound sense, and truisms not easily refuted; severe ana satirical in its tone; elegant and terse in its arrangement; and profoundly convincing in the argument, based upon correct data. No military man can arise from a perusal without acknowledging that in this volume he has found a graphic detail of the grievances of the profession, and a just animadversion upon the many wrongs perpetrated upon officers. The book itself must be purchased by subalterns as well as general officers, and carefully read.--British Army Dispatch.

The Two Mounted Sentries is the taking title of a capital satire upon the mismanagement of the Horse Guards, It embraces a wide field of commentary upon all the existing army abuses. We hope to have a little more space at our command next week, and to bestow upon the work the full notice it appears to deserve.--United Service Gazette.

Read extensively it will be, if only on account of the title it bears.--Naval and Military Gazette.

By G. HERBERT RODWELL, Esq. Illustrated with an elaborate Frontispiece of the Bridge, built by Peter of Colechurch, and Twenty four Steel Engravings, by Ashley. Demy 8vo., price 14s cloth, 17s half-morocco.

This new novel constitutes another arch in a mental structure of no small artistic skill, and is another item towards a strong aggregate claim for popularity.--Hull Advertiser.

This work is quite a curiosity, and must become popular. The history of Old London Bridge, as it existed three centuries ago, is given with such apparent correctness, and the anecdotal part is so interesting, that few persons would be inclined to remain ignorant of its contents.--Plymouth, and Devonport Journal.

This charming novel of "Old London Bridge," is delightful. With the development of character, the plot is deepened and widened, and interest is increased accordingly. The work, is sound, healthy, and refreshing, and we cordially recommend it to the notice of that portion of the reading world who have not yet sought after it, which we imagine must be very small indeed.-- Harrogate Advertiser.

The lovers of romance will find, we feel assured, in this tale something that will charm them. It is a correct picture of olden times--exemplified in an interesting story.--Plymouth Herald.

Old London Bridge is a most excellent tale: the various characters are boldly drawn, and the plot of stirring interest.--Cambridge Independent.

The plot of this novel is interesting, and the historical suggestions lively and valuable.--Hull Advertiser.

THE WORKS OF J. G. KOHL.

TRAVELS IN IRELAND. New Edition, price 3s 6d, cloth lettered.
TRAVELS IN SCOTLAND. New Edition, price 2s 6d, cloth lettered.
Mr. Kohl's work on Ireland is, beyond all comparison, the most succinct and faithful we have seen, and exhibits the lamentable condition of that country in alight which none but a foreigner, or, at least, a sagacious traveller, could paint it. His testimony is doubly valuable from the weight of experience and authority which his name carries with it.--Times.

2. ANDRE. FANCHETTE, &c.
3. MAUPRAT.
4. COMPANION TO THE TOUR OF FRANCE.
5. MILLER OF ANGIBAULT.

Any Volume may be had separately.

The introduction of this much misrepresented writer to the English reader by an acknowledged female translator, and by a respectable publisher, is a literary event worthy of special notice. Madame Dudevant is the greatest and noblest of French writers of fiction. She has a high and comprehensive mind, great observation and penetration into human nature.--Douglas Jerrold.

The characters are drawn with the most life-like seriousness. The events take place before our eyes. We see and know everybody concerned in them. The whole narrative, from beginning to end, is drafted, as it were, fresh from the occurrences just as they are supposed to have happened--without premeditation, finesse, or artifice. The translation is fluently executed. It presents no difficulty whatever to the reader.--Atlas.

J. AND D. A. DARLING'S

DR. MILLINGEN'S NEW WORK.

THE PASSIONS-MIND AND MATTER.

Illustrated with Anecdotes of Hereditary Insanity. By Dr. MILLINGEN, M.A., Principal Physician to Hanwell Lunatic Asylum. One thick volume, demy 8vo., price 6s, cloth.

Dr. Millingen's "Mind and Matter" is the most entertaining and instructive book we have met with a long time. Our readers, we are assured, will thank us for the recommendation, when they feel the pleasure and advantage which arise from its perusal.--Court Journal.

The subjects are such as must excite the attention of every thinking man, and of every extensive and earnest reader. He seeks to represent mankind as it truly is, and treats his subject with plain yet forcible language so as to be understood by all.--Morning Advertiser.

The chapter on organization and the transmission of hereditary disease, is one which affects every family in creation, and wonderful arc the instances, of this susceptibility quoted by Dr. Millingen.--Literary Gazette.

Second Notice. From the quotations in this and our last Literary Gazette, some idea may be formed of this entertaining and instructive volume, which ought to find favour in all eyes. The latter portion of the volume is full of piquant remarks on life and society, and, altogether, what with its philosophy, and what with the innumerable anecdotes, it is a production to gratify every taste, and improve while it amuses the leisure hour.--Ibid.

THE ORIGIN AND PROGRESS OF ASTRONOMY.

By JOHN NARRIEN, F.R.A.S. With numerous Plates. 8vo. reduced to 3s 6d, cloth.

MEMOIRS AND REMAINS OF THE REV. THOMAS RAWSON TAYLOR.
With an Introduction by JAMES MONTGOMERY. Portrait. Second . Edition. Fcap. 8vo., price 2s 6d, cloth.

MARGARET RUSSELL:

an Autobiography. Fcap. 8vo., price 3s, cloth.

This well-written tale contains many passages of great force and beauty. The story embraces many scenes of real life--the virtuous and the vicious, the pure and the degraded; and the incidents follow in interesting progression, till the reader comes to the close, well satisfied with the author's performance from first to last.--Literary Gazette.

The truth is that the book is an exceedingly clever one, though pitched throughout upon the mournful key. It is impossible not to continue to read it; the very perplexities which arise from the heroine's moral character so provoke one, and are proofs of the author's skill, and the reader's painful and involuntary interest in the story.--Morning Chronicle.

This little volume contains a well-written, affecting, and deeply-interesting tale. The author's style is simple and unaffected, but pure and correct. The moral ideas and reflections interspersed throughout are excellent without being mawkish: the sentiment is admirable.--Weekly Dispatch.
