The work of Mr. Ashley is chiefly addressed to the amateur. The text is accompanied by some beautiful examples, etched with great delicacy, but very effective.--Art Journal.
This is a very interesting little publication, containing instructions on the use of the etching needle, grounds, biting liquids. &c. It takes its origin, the preface informs us, in the prevailing fashion for ladies, from the Sovereign downwards, to amuse themselves in the occupation of etching. The author has defined the processes with much clearness. The etchings which accompany his observations possess great merit. They are in a variety of styles, and comprehend landscape, marine subjects, and figures, many executed with much beauty. The trees in the Frontispiece are touched with great spirit; so are the pollard willows in Plato III. The ruins in Plate V, are effective. The second subject in Plate VII. is very elegant--the distance in Plate IX. excellent. The anatomy of the trees in Plate X. is given with great feeling and care, and a very effective subject of landscape and animals is Plate XII.--Athenaeum.
This series unmistakeably comprises some of the most brilliant, the most exquisitely rendered, and, by far, the most effective modern production of this interesting branch of art we have ever had an opportunity of examining. The letter-press instruction is conveyed clearly and agreeably, and the getting up of the volume is perfection itself, whilst its binding is at once rich and daintily elegant.--Magazine of Science.

As a delineator of incidents and life at sea, Mr. Hannay seems to us to be advancing rapidly to the place occupied by "the Old Sailor," in his happier days. A full share of praise is due to Mr. Ashley, the artist: his illustrations are excellent.--Eastern Counties Herald.
This is a capital sea story, and we think our predictions as to its success will be completely verified. It is written in a pleasant and lively style, and comprises an abundant flow of humour, and interesting incidents.--Plymouth and Devonport Weekly Journal.
These sketches in ultra-marine prove vastly interesting--the more they advance the more we like them. The pic-nic on board the Baboon is very cleverly written, and the illustrations by A. Ashley are very creditably executed.--Liverpool Chronicle.
A continuation of interesting adventures by land and sea, by the author of those amusing and satirical publications, "Biscuits and Grog," "A Claret-Cup," &c, in which many strange scenes are depicted. The writer maintains his satirical vein, and his little work, with its embellishments, will well repay a perusal. The dialogues are full of spirit and anecdote.--Plymouth Herald.
This little serial maintains the interest which the first number called forth. The character of old Toe Chilton is well developed; and his singular manner of forming friendships by treading on the toes of his victims is original, and stamps the author a man of humour.--Doncaster Gazette.
King Dobbs excels in breadth of fun and humour.--Morning Chronicle.
These Sketches in ultramarine will amuse those who used to delight in Captain Marryatt, Basil Hall, and Glasscock. Though the whole of the boat-cloak of either of those sea writers has not fallen upon Mr. Hannay, he inherits a fair portion of it, and under its covering will, we think, perform a prosperous voyage.--Bell's Life.
These sketches in ultramarine are of an exceedingly amusing character. The reader is treated with a cruise in the Mediterranean, and the result of a trip on shore at Naples.--Plymouth, Devonport, and Stonehouse Herald.

The Horse Guards proves to be a work written by an officer, and which contains a vast amount of practical knowledge, sound sense, and truisms not easily refuted; severe ana satirical in its tone; elegant and terse in its arrangement; and profoundly convincing in the argument, based upon correct data. No military man can arise from a perusal without acknowledging that in this volume he has found a graphic detail of the grievances of the profession, and a just animadversion upon the many wrongs perpetrated upon officers. The book itself must be purchased by subalterns as well as general officers, and carefully read.--British Army Dispatch.
The Two Mounted Sentries is the taking title of a capital satire upon the mismanagement of the Horse Guards, It embraces a wide field of commentary upon all the existing army abuses. This well-written tale contains many passages of great force and beauty. The truth is that the book is an exceedingly clever one, though pitched throughout upon the mournful key.
